Overview

The Learning Accomplishment Profile-Revised (LAP-R) is a criterion-referenced assessment. The purpose of the LAP-R is to assist teachers, clinicians, and parents in assessing individual skill development of young children. The results can be used to generate a complete picture of a child’s developmental progress across seven developmental domains so that individualized, developmentally appropriate activities can be planned and implemented. This assessment can be used with children with typical and atypical development.

As a criterion-referenced assessment, the LAP-R neither assigns a diagnostic label nor yields statistically precise measures regarding a child’s level of functioning. It is not a standardized test. The information generated by the LAP-R can be used in conjunction with norm-referenced when determining whether or not a child has a disability.

Age Range

The LAP-R is appropriate for children functioning in the 36-72 month age range.

Administration

  • Takes approximately 1.5 hours
  • Domains may be administered in more than one session
  • May be administered at specific checkpoints, or used as ongoing observation tool
  Structure of LAP-R

The LAP-R contains a hierarchy of developmental skills arranged in chronological sequence from 11 to 36 months in seven developmental domains, including

  • Gross Motor
  • Fine Motor
  • Pre-Writing
  • Cognitive
  • Language
  • Self-Help
  • Personal/Social

LAP-R Assessment Materials
Manual The LAP-R Manual forms the core of the assessment. The manual includes
  • a materials list for each domain
  • procedural instructions for administering individual items
  • scoring criteria for each item
  • summary pages
  • an IEP form, and
  • a developmental profile page.
Scoring Booklet The LAP-R scoring booklets contain an abbreviated form of each item name in the same sequential order as the manual and space for scoring assessment results, a comment column, and a developmental profile. The LAP-R scoring booklet is not an assessment instrument. It must be used in conjunction with the LAP-R Manual.
Assessment Kit The LAP-R Assessment Kit contains most of the required materials (except large items) and should be used to obtain more consistent results.
Learning Activity Cards The Learning Activity Cards are a set of 380 sequential cards correlated with the LAP-R, one card for each item in the seven domains. Each card describes step-by-step procedures for supporting skill development as well as one or more developmentally appropriate activities.
Materials in Spanish LAP-R materials are available in Spanish, including the manual, scoring booklet, and Learning Activity Cards.

Reporting LAP-R Assessment Results
The LAP-R provides specific skill information for mastered and emerging skills. These results indicate broad patterns of development by domain as well as individual skill development.
Assessment and Observation Summary Sheets Forms to summarize the progress of individual children at the beginning, middle, and end of the program year are provided in the back of the scoring booklet. Each form contains space to indicate skills the child has achieved, emerging skills, and strategies for supporting skill development at home.
Profile For a visual representation of the child's developmental skills, use the profile form on the back of the LAP-R Manual or Scoring Booklet.
Technical Qualities A study to examine and document the reliability and validity of the LAP-R is currently being conducted by Chapel Hill Training Outreach Project, Inc. A report concerning the results of this investigation will be published in 2003.
