Fifty-two percent of the Disability Services Coordinators in Region IV have degrees or licenses in early childhood, special education, speech pathology or psychology. Another forty percent hold degrees or licenses in "other disciplines" that range from nursing to social work.

Florida and North Carolina report the largest number of Coordinators with degrees/licenses in early childhood. Mississippi, Kentucky and Florida, respectively have the largest percentage of coordinators with degrees/licenses in special education.

A comparison of Program Information Report (PIR) data from 1996 and 1997, reveals the following:

An increase in the percentage of coordinators with degrees or licenses in early childhood, special education, speech pathology or psychology increased from 43 to 48%.

Coordinators with degrees and/or licenses in early childhood increased from 16 to 18%.

Coordinators with degrees or licenses in special education increased from 15 to 16%.

The number of coordinators with "no" degrees or licenses decreased from 21 to 16%.
