Supporting Families of
Children with Disabilities

These day-and-a-half family empowerment sessions will focus on promoting  positive approaches to full family involvement in the inclusion of children with disabilities. Special attention will be devoted to identifying strategies for supporting fathers in their roles as caregivers of their children during the early childhood years. Interactive training activities will build upon existing skills and strategies to enhance the quality and scope of the support provided to families.

 Who Should Attend

Registration is open to teams of Head Start/Early Head Start grantees in each state. Teams should include: Disability Services Coordinator, Family Services Manager, Fatherhood /Male Involvement Coordinator and Parent (of a child with a disability)*

Registration Fee: $60.00 per team

*A childcare stipend is available for parents

Networking/TA Sessions for Early Head Start

This one day networking sessions will provide an opportunity for new and seasoned Early Head Start Disabilities Services Managers to network with other colleagues to discuss issues and share information, resources, and best practices. Discussion sessions will be facilitated by DSQIC Early Head Start staff and will focus on
  • Developing/Revising the Early Head Start Disabilities Services Plan
  • Developing Partnership Agreements with Part C

Literacy Rich Environments for All Children

Focus on Disabilities

In support of the new national initiative on Early Literacy, the DSQIC has developed a three hour training session on facilitating a literacy rich environment for all children, focusing on children with disabilities.

Sessions will be provided in each state. The training incorporates a discussion of current research and best practices in early childhood and includes hands-on activities to facilitate planning and implementing literacy rich activities in the classroom for young children with disabilities. Sessions also address activities for children with severe disabilities and discusses the use of assistive technology devices.

Further information and details will be sent to all Head Start and Early Head Start grantees.

Torchbearers Leadership Seminars

Fifty participants from across the region will be selected to participate in the Torchbearers Leadership Seminars. These intensive seminar combines hands-on experiences, lectures and group discussions designed to improve the skills and knowledge of Head Start Disability services managers to plan and implement quality services for children with disabilities and their families. Sessions will focus on developing leadership skills for the new millennium. Participants must submit a written application stating why they would like to be involved and include a written recommendation from their program director. Two sessions will be conducted in the 2002-2003 program year.

Back to Basics

Back to Basics is the on-site, interactive training program for Head Start teaching staff. The training focuses on planning and implementing developmentally appropriate activities and outcomes for children with disabilities. It is designed for Head Start teachers, teacher assistants, lead teachers, center directors; disability services assistants and all staff involved in planning and implementing classroom activities. The DSQIC will work with each program to customize the training activities to address their specific needs. Six hours of training will be provided on-site.

Agenda items include: Gathering Information; Planning goals/objectives; Implementing IEP Goals/Objectives; Monitoring Goals/Objectives. Two one-hour follow-up sessions will be conducted with training participants.
