Promoting Positive BehaviorPromoting positive behavior in young children is a priority for many early childhood programs. As programs enroll children with more challenging behaviors, some with diagnosed behavior disorders, program administrators must lead in the development and implementation of plans and strategies to support parents, teachers and children. This 240-page guide with accompanying 45-minute video promotes the concept of a unified program approach in addressing this issue. The guide is a compilation of resource materials, training activities and bibliographies in addition to a description of a step-by-step process to establish a unified approach for promoting positive behavior which is designed to meet individual program needs with available resources and is implemented throughout the entire program. In addition to the print materials, an observational videotape, "Watching Children," is included in the three-ring vinyl binder. The tape may be used with various training activities to stimulate discussion as well as to help audience participants to sharpen their observational skills. 240-page manual with 45 minute VHS videocassette $65. |

An acronym for Preventing Abuse of Narcotics, Tobacco, Drugs and Alcohol, P.A.N.D.A. includes curriculum ideas in four general areas: building healthy bodies, and saying "no" to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. The curriculum is based on the conviction that even very young children can have a positive impact on their own health and safety if they are actively educated. |
| Each of the four units includes activities for
use in classrooms and with parents at home. Each unit also includes an audiocassette with
songs, rhythms and stories featuring such characters as Bobo, the bunny who can't say
"no;" Harry; Amanda; Grannie Panda and Puffin, the wolf who tries to lead the
children astray. Activities are generally aimed at 4-year olds, but may be adapted for
older children. The intention of the guide's authors is to provide early childhood teachers with a compendium of ideas and activities which can be modified to suit the specific needs of the local community and individual children and families. This 300-page curriculum guide and four audio cassettes are packaged in a vinyl notebook. 1-5 copies, $65 each; 6-10 copies, $55 each; 11 and more, $45 each "Introducing PANDA"This 12-minute slide-tape provides an overview of the curriculum guide for teachers, administrators and parents. LAP-RThe Learning Accomplishment Profile (Revised)The LAP, which was developed by the Chapel Hill Training-Outreach Project and first published in 1974 (revised in 1995), is a criterion-referenced assessment instrument for use with children (including those with disabilities) who are functioning in the developmental age range of 36 to 72 months. The LAP-R is designed to provide the teacher a simple guide for the systematic observation or assessment of a child's existing skills in seven developmental areas:
Its ease of administration makes the LAP-R ideal for helping the teacher plan developmentally appropriate learning activities for individual children and groups. The LAP-R also facilitates the teacher's ability to monitor child progress. Although the LAP-R is a valuable guide for observing children with typical development, it is especially helpful in identifying appropriate learning objectives for young children with developmental disabilities. The LAP-R's comprehensive approach to the total development of young children addresses nearly 400 samples of behavior.
